Layoffs All Over The Travel Industry

All of the airlines having been laying off staff over the past year. Now with the economy getting worse and businesses cutting back on travel, the layoffs are expanding

170 workers at the American Airline maintenance base are now without a job.

Rental car company Hertz Global Holdings(HTZ) said it will eliminate more than 4,000 jobs worldwide as it further cuts costs amid slowing demand.

The biggest cuts among the network carriers came at Delta Air Lines, a 10.7 percent reduction in force, and Northwest Airlines, down 5.9 percent. The two airlines merged in the fall.

AirTran cut a tenth of its work force during the 12 months. Frontier Airlines, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last year, whittled 15.3 percent.
